Take Home Message: The Endangered Species Act has prevented the extinction of more than two hundred plants and animals and facilitated the full recovery of 38 species. Yet congressional efforts to modify, or "modernize", the Endangered Species Act are on the rise. While certain aspects of the law should be amended, calls to "modernize" the Endangered Species Act are led by lawmakers with poor track records on science and the environment. Attempts to amend the Act during the current political environment would likely strip endangered species of key protections rather than improve the effectiveness of the conservation in the United States.
